Im building my vert up as much as i can but i have a very low budget since i have to fix the body now at the same time as my engine swap.
What i have:
93 z32 convertible
90 z32 t-top tt (parts car)

I plan to swap the engines over the summer but i need to know what i should do while the engines are out. Like should buy a rebuild kit, new efi, etc.
Also i think one of the turbos might have a blown gasket.

So is this a possible build or am i going to have to hold up and keep saving?

A rebuild will eat most of that budget, and give no gains, but will set you up for future work.

I think after you replace all your seals and do your timing belts you'll have eaten pretty well into that budget anyway. I suggest this and if anything's left, you can get a lot out of a boost controller and a new ecu chip. Another option is chip, boost jets and a catback. Hard to gauge since you didn't explain what's done.

Maintenance over power, hard to have a fun fast car if it runs like crap. Rebuild, make the heart of the car strong, newer style injectors, possibly bigger for future mods. Im not sure if internally you can afford new rods and pistons, but if able to, this is the route I would go.

3K is a very tight budget for this car. I am already at 5k and I have not even put the parts in the motor yet.

Option 1: Just swap the motor. Under $1000-$2k cost DIY
- In this option you want to keep the motor intact and just change all the old vacuum and coolant lines so they don't leak once the engine is in the car.
- Delete EGR. $30 kit from CZP or Z1.
- Change the Oil pump with new Nissan Genuine pump ($165-200).
- Change front main and rear seals.
- Change timing belt and water pump.
- Change clutch or go lightweight flywheel and clutch upgrade ($360-$500).
- Upgrade injectors so 370cc don't max out even though stock injectors are fine at 15psi on stock turbos.
- Pop-charger (Cold air intake).
- ECU Chip ($100) from reputable place like Z1, CZP, etc. This will let you run higher boost to safe 15psi which should put you at 350whp. People have pushed more on stock turbo. It all depends on the health of your engine and turbo.

Option 2: Around $4k-$5k Build for more power.
- Buy the CZP engine rebuild kit for $1444 as someone recommended to me. It will cover Forged Pistons, Rods, All gaskets and bearings. This will give you a good platform for over 500hp.
- http://www.conceptzperformance.com/Cart ... 154.21.231
- Buy upgraded Garret turbo's for $1000-1400 with GT28r compressor side and hot side. By this point you will have already exhausted your $3k budget.
- Don't forget machine work costs.
- Downpipes and Exhaust will run you $340-500.
- Nistune ($600) recommended.
- Other miscellaneous things.

Option 1 will give you best bang for the money and keep stock reliability. Option 2 will give you the ability to hit 400whp-500whp but it depends on a lot of things and right upgrades.

I recommend maintenance as well. Add some modest power adders like a Selin kit (SpecialtyZ.com sells them with used, tested MAFs), maybe a UR or ASP underdrive pulley and HI water pump pulley. Check the turbos for shaft play, replace if necessary.

Inspect the detonation sensor harness, replace if even barely cracked. Same with the sensor itself. With the engine out, timing doesn't get any better.

Replace motor mounts with new OEM or the BDE stock style replacements:

http://bde-performance.com/mounts2.htm

Contact Specialty Z or ztuner.com for an ECU/EPROM upgrade. Better than any other option available.

IMHO, I'd pass on Nistune unless you're tuning your self. Otherwise, it's more economical and effective to participate in a dyno day where Harry (Ztuner) or Greg and Seb (specialtyZ) are flown out to a location near you. They'll work out all the bugs and tune your car perfectly. I would do that after you're done modding. Plus if you buy your ECU from them, I believe they give you a partial credit to the dyno costs.

Again, IMHO, unless you're willing to do some finagling your self, get a Z32 specific turbo kit. Buying off the shelf Garrett units is fine for a DIYer, but most people want bolt up convenience.

+1 on maintenance, maintenance, MAINTENANCE. Do it now save headaches later. Since your budget is fairly low just do things that require extensive work while your engine is in the car.

I suggest you replace all seals, and def buy a new EFI harness and you might want to consider replacing the trans/alternator harness. I agree with Tony if the knock sensor harness looks less than perfect, just replace it as well as various hoses ect you will be in good shape. If you have money left over then you could play around with the rest but just remember to buy the things that require the most work since you will already have your engine out.

Thanks for the advice. Im going with the engine rebuild, det sensor and efi replacement from z1.. (because im close enough to pick then up, no shipping) then I need to do something about that turbo that is shooting oil out.
