My car shakes in two instances. First when i am travelling fast and break, the steering wheel and the body shake more than normal. Secondly when i switch the ignition off, it shakes. What can i do the fix both these? Will new brakes fix the first? If not how can i make the car and engine more rigid?

That's definitely some warped rotors for the first...

one the second point can you describe the shaking a little more? is it a full car "shake" or more like a rattle? cause a shake sounds like a slight engine imbalance.

Check your motor mounts, tension rods up front and balljoints.

My money's on the broken motor mount... Does it make any sound when you first press the gas pedal if you take off hard?

check both of your motor mounts. If by chance one tore or warped, the engine could slide and still be sitting but cocked in an angle. That could explain the huge rattling, if not most definitely warped rotors. If it's your motor mounts check your transmission mount, because your transmission mount might need replacing as well.

Do you feel pulsation in the pedal when you brake or is it just the whole car shaking? If the rotors are warped you'll feel it in the pedal, You'll know.

Go to a tire shop and have your front tires checked and your wheels balanced balanced. A warped tire will cause this problem because if you roll some thing that is uneven its very rough and bouncy. If your tires have a flat spot on them or a bulge in them this can cause the same problem as well. Like i said just have a tire shop examine both your wheels and tires and get the wheel balanced its no more than 5-10 dollars per tire and will make all the difference in the world, if its anymore find a new shop.

If that doesn't work try looking at your strut rod bushings, mine had the same horrible shaking when braking and going on the highway look at your bushings to see if they are weak
