What cams are good to keep my vtc?

Car: 1997 kouki S14 SR powered w/400whp and a stock 1994 FD R2 (26,000miles),

I have an s14 "notch back" motor and I did a search to find what cams I should use, but no one (that I found) has posted anything about keeping the vtc and upgrading the cams. is 264/264 safe for should I go with 256/264? Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions would be great. I want to keep my valve timing control. Thanks

Everytime I hear someone mention upgrading cams and vtc, it always ends with "You will give up the vtc to upgrade cams". sorry but I don't know anymore without searching...
