Curious what type of motor oil you guys use in your Qs. I just switched to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy after using Castrol Edge for several months. Both really great oils I have to say, but so far I'm really liking the Mobil 1. The engine seems to sound even quieter than before if that's even possible. I know Mobil 1 in general is a pretty popular choice around here and I can see why. Anyone ever try their Extended Performance line? I might want to try that one on my next oil change.

Dino oil is the ideal for the F50/Q45. There's no sense in spending money on synthetic oil due to the amount of oil the VK45DE consumes every 3k-5k miles.

Hmm, that's funny you should say that. I just changed my oil after 6500 miles using 0W-20 Castrol Edge w/Titanium (now known as EP) and my Q did not consume a single drop of oil. Plus the oil was still very clean looking. I'm a big believer in synthetic oils, especially the thinner ones. My Q purrs like a kitten on synthetic and I'm not switching.

Edit: My bad, you were talking about the F50 Q. I have a '94. I have heard about the F50 oil consumption issues though.

I'm running Mobil 1 0W-30 in the Q and G. I'll use it in my truck too after I run out of my cheap stash of Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30.

After reading "motor oil 101" on Bob is the Oil Guy - it seemed like a good fit.

I've read those articles many times as well and I agree it's definitely a safe bet. I've actually considered going to a 0W-30 myself (namely German Castrol based on all the rave reviews I've hear about it). But I still believe with synthetics that thinner is better, so I'll probably be sticking with the 0W-20 despite the fact that the Q is speced for 10W-30. But back in 1993 (or rather 1987/1988 when this engine was being produced), were any car manufacturers even using a 20W oil? I believe 30 was the gold standard (and thinnest) available back then, so I'm not so sure if this engine were produced today, that Infiniti would have still recommended 10W-30 (unlikely IMO). I know from my own experience, that my car likes the thinner oils I've been using, so I'm not planning on changing it any time soon, especially since it's not consuming any oil at all.

I went to Mobil 5-20 and got a horrible tick/knock. Went back to 0-40 Mobil 1 and it went away somewhat. I plan on running 0 or 5W-50 if I can find it.
