What brand name of engine bearings and piston rings did you use?

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

I am really interested to see what everyone chose in the way of bearings and piston rings.

If you could please list what brand you chose for each, what influenced your choice, and how much horsepower to make with your engine.

thanks for your time,DbD

Clevite 77 bearings because my machine shop recommends them as does practically EVERYONE else, tri-metal construction, excellent quality etc. As for rings, I'm using the ones that came with my Ross pistons. Can't tell you the power yet because the motor is at the machine shop as we speak :)

I've heard quite a few complaints about total seal...but the domestic guys seem to like them so I say the verdict is still out. Apparently they require a special honing procedure that a lot of people dont do.

Clevite makes great products...Total seal rings have had various problems with the KADET. I've never personally used them, but I know the Altima rings are very good and cheaper.

Lets not...Sorry to be a **** but that is all anyone is going to end up talking about. I am much more interested in bearings and rings right now.

thanks for evryone's replies so far and i look forward to people with total seal rings comments.

Is clevite the only top brand out there or is there and equal quality product?

almost everyone that has complained about total seal rings has in one way or another installed them wrong. follow the instructions to the letter, and they'll work fine.

oem.

Here's a good thread to check out about Federal Mogul vs. OEM http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....mogul Not that the OEM is bad by any stretch, 99% of people are using them with no problems ;)

how much are Altima rings? will they fit a KA24E? are there different bearing sizes or can one just get "stock" bearings and put them in?

We use Nissan OE first, Cleveite or NDC second. We use a Deaves top ring with a totalseal second ring and a stock oil control ring on my race engines.

Or we have also tried and liked a Hastings second ring and oil control ring. The Deaves oil control are just as good but a little fragile on install.

This is all on a 12.0:1 engine.

Hastings makes really good moly ring sets, and good prices. If your in the market for a cast ring set there are a variety of decent manufactures, I use ITM brand on all mine, accurate end gaps.

As for bearings, really, there is no "superior" bearing imho, everyone has their own opinion. Bring you crankshaft into the machine shop and get it polished or ground, the machinist will let you know what you need. Always plasti-gauge the journals during assembly to make certain. I run ITM bearings on all my performance KA's and all other completely rebuilt engines that leave our shop.

BTW. Get your crankshaft fully cleaned, and polished/ground. The oil plugs located at the ends of the oil passages in the crankshaft must be removed to thoroughly clean. On the ka, these are small ball bearing plugs that have been stamped on the corner to keep them in. If you ask any machinist that has actually worked with these, they will tell you they are a pita to remove let alone reinstall. The absolute best method is to drill them out, tap, and reinsert a threaded allen plug instead of the ball. This allows the crankshaft to be cleaned easier in the future, as well as replacing the ball plugs that can be prone to failure.

If your interested, I sell full hasting moly ring sets, ITM cast ring sets, ITM and ACL bearings for ka24e/de.

Total seals are excellent, if installed correctly.

are the total seal rings getting installed upsidedown and letting to much oil by? just currious as to how people were installing them incorrectly and what problem was occuring because of it...

I have limited actual first hand knowledge of the total seals. I do know that they are a basic "endless" ring, meaning the ring ends overlap. The gap and fit of this overlap is where most would have problems i assume, they need to be file fit to exact tolerance for the bore. 8 out of 10 people probably dont check this and just install them.

I have seen a couple of sets, the ones I saw are actually 2 rings... one ring that youfile fit and a second(looks like the top and bottom of the oil ring pack) ring that fits in a step groove machined into the file fit ring. they have sets with a gapless first ring or gapless second ring.
