I'd really like to do more rafting/canoeing as well...
I really started getting into it when I talked to some people at a local sporting goods store, Galyans (now d!ck). One of the guys turned me onto a local group of people who go out on outings around Indiana for day trips. They also have weekend trips where we would go out to Virginia or Tennessee and hit some more challenging water. I have wanted to buy my own kayak forever, but it just wasn't reasonable for me to drop a big chunk of change on something that I couldn't do more regularly than 4 or 5 times a year. Plus, I had no place for storage or way to transport it. But, now that I have a house and a Jeep Cherokee to use to haul it around, I am thinking of going ahead and picking one up next year and really get into it more. The biggest hassle is having someone pick you up downstream and drive you back to your vehicle.
If you really want to get started, check out local places that sell kayaks, they will deffinetly have some sort of affiliation with a group of people who go out. Usually someone has a van with a trailer and drops everyone off and then picks them up at a pre-determined location downstream.
It's a great rush to take some nice rapids and go down a few waterfalls in a little kayak. It takes a good hour or two of practice to get used to turning yourself over under water, but that'a really about all you need to be able to do. It's a great way to exercise and be outside especially if there is some nice place to go nearby.
