What are you really adjusting with that knob on a coilover?

First off, I'm researching suspension. S14, some daily driving(1 or 2 times a week), primarily autoX.

My question is, on a coilover, what is the adjustment knob adjusting? Obviously the dampening, but is it the rebound or the compression or both? Is there a coilover that will allow me to adjust them separately? I know that I can do this with Koni's, but I'd have to build a strut housing. I can do it, but I can't find anything "off the shelf" that will do this.

From what i understand you are changing the ammount of area for the oil/pressure to squeeze through a plate thats in the center of the coilover. Bound and rebound settings are adjustable on higher end shocks.

These adjust both at the same time.

These adjust independently and are much more expensive.

You are adjusting the rebound rate with most coilovers on the market. It will have a mild effect on the compression dampening as well, but it's not significant.

I know someone that will make you Koni 8611 front housings for your car if you want to go with a true motorsports application. The 8611 shocks are better than anything remotely near their cost from all the typical manufacturers out there. They are 2-way shocks as you know.
