What are these?

I was just looking through my parts boxes and found these. I didn't see them on any of the diagrams. What are they? They look similar to the guide on the oil pump chain but much more heavy duty. My apologies for the ginormous picture.

Those bolt on your heads. They are apparently protection for the valve covers if a chain ever breaks or bails from the cam gears. One could also assume they are there to keep the chains from rubbing on the valve covers but if you have that much slop in your chains.... (once again) you've got bigger issues than scratched valve covers!
