I'm looking for a commuter car and am considering between a J30 or a M30 convertible. What should I expect? Anyone have any bad experience with any particular year model? Any leads to buying one in the SF Bay Area?

They're both generally very reliable cars...a transmission cooler is recommended for J30s. As for finding one, a J will be much easier to find than an M30 convertible. Check out Autotrader and other online car finding sources.

That's awesome JAMESMOST...you've got a sweet combination of owning a powerful Q & a M30 convertible for for those economically fun days in the sun. How much did these M30s cost brand new (back then)? Now I have to actively search for a M30...

the M was around $25k if i remember correctly. Gas milege is worse than my Q and it hAS A smaller tank. fun to drive but I do not love it - my wife drives it about 3 miles a day round trip to train station and we drive it to the beach in the summer. Also i do not find it to be the most comfortable car but u get used to it.

I wouldn't want to have a 'vert as a daily driver, but then again, I also don't live in the Bay Area, we have actual weather where I live.

Both cars are reliable and solidly built, I guess it would depend more on whether or not you'd like the extra room that a J30 offers, or if you're dead-set on a 2-door convertible.

IMO neither car make good commuters... Yes theyre reliable but dont get good mileage and so on....

I think a maxima or altima would be a better choice.

I was looking at M30 Convertibles two summers ago. I saw some really crappy automobiles. Convertibles tend to sell for more than they are worth, and are often owned by someone with an emotional inclination, but not a mechanical one. I suspect that buying a nice J30 is easier, J owners generally take better care of their cars.

But I did see one M30 that was gorgeous in Marin, so there is hope.

Good luck.

I want an M30 convertible just so I can use that line from "Three Kings"

Yep, that's it. I was doing a shoot for a magazine and while I had the camera out I took a few snapshots of the Q.
