what are the fins for?

i just noticed today my redtop sr has the fins on it and i was just wondering what they are there for...heat sink? i searched and came up with nothing usfull for my question.

Yes, they are basically heat sinks. Also the finned head redtop has some minor changes in the head design. The finned head redtop is more like the black top head as many say.
