What are the camera and floppy disk and checkmark icons 'sposed to be telling me in NICO forums?

I supposed the camera indicates a photo; but, then what is the floppy disk icon? And, what's that checkmark (see annotated photo attached below).

These are all over the Infiniti Online Mechanic forums (which I hang out at).

I'm confused. It doesn't seem as simple as it should be (what am I missin')?

For example, see the JPEG below which is a screenshot of the result of posting the GIF above.

Notice even though I posted a "PICTURE", the icon for the thread wasn't a camera; the icon for this single-post thread was a floppy disk.

I'm assuming, after I post this JPG, we'll then see both a floppy disk and a camera?

But why distinguish between the two types of photos? And, what's a checkmark 'sposed to indicate to us?

Well, I was wrong (again).

When I posted the first message with a GIF, a floppy disk showed up.When I posted the second message (with a JPEG), the floppy disk stayed.(see below).

What gives?

I'll bet if I posted FIRST with a JPEG, a camera icon would've resulted. Then, if I posted with a GIF, I suspect the camera would have stayed.

But, then, there are some threads with both icons. How do you get those then?

Do you see why I am confused? Can someone simplify this enigma for me?

Thanks,Tangalora

Hold your cursor over them on them and find out.

Camera photo means you had the image hosted somewhere and used the URL brackets to link it.

Floppy disk means you attatched a picture to the post from your computer (and is currently being hosted on nico)

This did nothing for me in Netscape 7.2 on Windows XP.

However, when I switched to Internet Explorer, I then could see hover hints. camera ===> Contains Images floppy ===> File Attachment check ===> Poll

It's likely due to the browser settings (java and all that) and not the browser per se.

Q1: Does anyone see those hover hints in Netscape?.

I never use IE (unless I have to) so I never saw those hover hints before. One other difference is that Netscape shrinks the photos so they fit nicely in the thread ... while IE shows them in their original ungainly huge size. Yuck.

Again, it could be my IE settings (as I never touch the stuff).

Q2: Does anyone see the photos in a nice small format in IE?

OK. Here's an experiment.

Attached is a JPEG screenshot of this thread as it shows in Netscape (notice how the photos are shrunk automagically to easily fit in the window).

I'm posting this JPEG from nissaninfiniticlub (not from nicoclub) where the URL is the same except for "nissaninfniiti" substituted for "nico".

Two more questions ("jes wonderin')Q3: Do you see the photos like I do (or are all yours too large to fit nicely)?

And, as an additional test of what you mean by an "image hosted somewhere" ...Q4: Does this thread now show a camera (considering that it's posted from nissaninfiniticlub and not nicoclub).

Quote »Two more questions ("jes wonderin')Q3: Do you see the photos like I do (or are all yours too large to fit nicely)?Q4: Does this (posted fron nissaninfiniticlub & not nicoclub) show a camera?[/quote]Well, it still showed a floppy disk (so it made no difference posting a picture from nicoclub vs nissaninfiniticlub.

Here is a shot of the same thing as the previous post, but, instead of Netscape, it's from IE.

Notice the photos show up HUGE in IE (again, it could be my preferences settings).

Does anyone out there see smallified photos in IE (or do you all see the huge irritating photos instead of photos that fit the page like I see in Netscape)?

Below is a link to my recent oilpan thread on nicoclub:Note: That Q45 oilpan R&R link has both a camera & a floppy icon.

I will check to see if this nicoclub link alone will create the camera icon. http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=77266 ( http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=77266 )

Note I did not manually insert any URL tags in this test.

Below is a link to an older brake pad & runout R&R&R thread; this one was posted to nissaninfiniticlub and not to nicoclub.

Let's see if mere links to nissaninfiniticlub make a difference in the icons

http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....47476 ( http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....47476 )

Again, this link to an old thread was manually written without use of url tags.

Drat!

I was sure that the "outside" link to nissaninfiniticlub would result in a camera icon. But, I was wrong (again).

Let's try a series of "outside" links from Wes' & Jesda's Infiniti Q45 web site:

1. The main site home page itself: http://www.q45.org/techhelp.html (www.q45.org/techhelp.html)

2. Inexpensive fuel pump R&R & fuel-pump control unit $-free repair: http://www.q45.org/fuelpumpfail.html (www.q45.org/fuelpumpfail.html)

3. Photo from the home page of q45.org (Wes' Q, I presume): http://www.q45.org/splashright.jpg (www.q45.org/splashright.jpg)

If my assumption is correct, the link to these pages (or at least the link to the photo on these pages) should then cause a camera icon to show up on this thread.

Double Drat!

I was sure that the "outside" links to q45.org would result in a camera icon. But, I was wrong (again & again).

OK. Who'se gonna show me how to get a camera icon then?

Far as I know, for a linked picture to show a camera icon, it has to be posted using the [img] tag.

In exasperation, let's try a link to a nico & nissaninfiniticlub photo itself. Maybe that's what they mean by a "linked picture".

1. The link below is from the nissaninfiniticlub thread:http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=50000 (www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=50000)

This is the link to the sunvisor re-engineering photo:http://www.nissaninfiniticlub....g.jpg(www.nissaninfiniticlub.com/zerofile/4788/nico_q45_sunvisor_threading_mangling.jpg)

2. Here's a similar sunvisor engineering link using the archived "nicoclub" URL without the "www" on front (maybe that makes a difference):http://nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=39096 (nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=39096)

3. Lastly, here's a similar link using the visual basic "Insert Web Link" button: http://www.nicoclub.com/zerofi...e.jpg (www.nicoclub.com/zerofile/4406/nico_q45 ... d_size.jpg)

Let's see if any of these tests cause the mysterious camera to finally show up.

OK. So be it. Nothing worked yet to get a camera tag. Let me try the IMAGE tag (I never used it to my knowledge even though I've probably posted a thousand annotated pictures on the Infiniti Online Mechanic forum to date) ...

1. Using the IMG tag, here is a linked photo of a freebie Infiniti sunvisor repair (on nicoclub):

(www.nicoclub.com/zerofile/4406/nico_q45 ... d_size.jpg)

2. Here is an IMG tag'd linked photo of a fuel-pump controller freebie re-soldering (on nissaninfiniticlub):

(nissaninfiniticlub.com/zerofile/4188/nico_fpcu_repair.jpg)

3. And, lastly, heres' an IMG tagged photo from Wes' & Jesda's site:(www.q45.org/splashright.jpg)

Maybe one of these will cause a camera icon to appear!

Wooohoo. That IMG tag worked (sort of).

This thread now has a camera icon.

The wierd thing is that the IMG tag didn't show the image for the first two images in the previous post ... it only showed the last photo.

I don't know if that means multiple IMG tags only show the last image ... or if that just means linking to images inside of nicoclub or nissaninfiniticlub don't work.

1. Let me see if this single image to a nicoclub photo works: (nissaninfiniticlub.com/zerofile/4188/nico_fpcu_repair.jpg)

2. Or if this image works:

(www.nicoclub.com/zerofile/4406/nico_q45 ... d_size.jpg)

I guess [IMG] tags don't work for nico photos; but they seem to work for outside photos. In summary, the camera icon seems to be for images which are OUTSIDE the nico & nissaninfiniti club sites AND (this is the big AND) AND they are linked with the explicit [IMG] tag (not just a URL).

I think.

Since it's off topic, I responded but in a separate thread hoping to learn something new; see the question in that thread about time & money (plus the NICO advantage) ...

http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=92117 (www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=92117)

Basically, if someone like I (who is not mechanically inclined nor well equipped) can do a really big job with NICO help, (like removing an engine or reliably repairing 500 dollar parts for free), you can too (following the NICO howtos)!

I'm astounded by how much work on the Q you've done entirely by yourself. I learned how to change my own oil only last month.

Yeah I'm amazed too! That's why I'm thinking of doing chain guides myself...but that may not happen if I get a 94.

Funny you should mention the chain guides. My dealer-bought one-previous owner 1990 Q45 has originals. As far as I know anyway (nothing turned up in a dealer search).

At the moment (see photo), I have lotsa' stuff off the engine.

While I was down there, lookin' up at the front engine gusset, I beganto wonder to myself ... 'while I'm here' ... why don't I just replace the alternator, water pump, and, for a fleeting moment, I considered the chain guides. The whole front of the engine being laid bare, it almostlooked invitingly easy to do. Almost never is all that stuff off the car.

Then, within moments, reality brought me back to my senses.
