Definitely. Make sure the brake system, suspension, and engine are all in tip-top shape, ESPECIALLY fluids, pads, etc. Invest in some preventative maintenance (such as replacing stuff that's worn, but not yet broken, and, if you plan heavy modding, go ahead and switch to synthetic oil).
After that, learn the car a bit. Drive it stock for a little while before you do anything.
Finally, start modding. The suspension is bound to be old and tired, so it wouldn't be a bad place to start. Get some ponies to turn those big, heavy wheels you'll be getting later.
