Title pretty much sums it up....how do you know when your timing chain and or guides need replaced on Hardbody 4 cyl engine? Is there a way to visually inspect? Is it noise only? When and where does noise indicate replacement is needed? I have a 97 Hardbody with 319K, and I have no real idea how well it was maintained or if this has ever been done. I DO KNOW that Im missing an exhaust bolt on the top of the exhaust manifold the very first one...however I have not yet removed the heat shield to see if bolt fell out or broke off. The engine seems to run well, and burns no oil. Its quiet EXCEPT for what sounds like metal rattling when started up sometime. Its not lifter noise, sounds more like tin or lite mettallic "crinkling" sound. Does not do it all the time......anyways any input will be greatly appreciated, as this is my daily driver and I cannot afford for it to be "down"

Sounds like the t/c tensioner is worn. It uses spring pressure to keep tension until the engine oil has enough of pressure to keep it going. These are common to fail and if yours is the original, that is one heck of a tensioner! The guides are more of a visual check unless you have t/c rattle after the oil pressure has risen. The right side guide is known to break at one of it's mounting points and flop around. With 319K, I'd bet you will need both guides. Get a Nissan tensioner also, forget aftermarket.

The start-up rattle is very common... I had it on my '97 HB at 105K, so I wouldn't use that as an indication that they're shot. That said - at your at your mileage, unknown maintenence history, and need for it to be reliable with no downtime - I would just replace them for peace of mind if nothing else.

I have 179k and I get that rattle at start up, but that is not the only way to know. I need to do mine I know it. If you are worried ......DO IT for piece of mind as said above. Also if maintenance is unknown change all fluids oil transmission rear end and flush radiator. OIL and filter and air filter.Tune up plugs and wires. All not too expensive if you do it yourself and then you know those things are done. That alone can extend the life a lot.

If you do the chain and guilds your going to want to put in new sprockets since the old ones have worn in to the old chain.
