what are 02 sensors

Hey all, I researched to no avail. Emmisssions guy told me I need a new O2 sensor. Ive found many a topic about the o2 sensors, but what are they and what do they do? Thanks

I'm not real big on them, but I think I know the basic idea. They detect the amount of oxygen in your exhaust to tell if you're runnin rich or lean..? All I know is that they help with fuel delivery.
