I have 1 12" and a 500 watt amp installed right now, and the balance isnt affected at all and the bass response from the hatch is awesome.I am in the process of building a much larger system. I am pulling the back seat out and gutting the rear of the car and im builing a box that holds 3 12" audiobahns. and each are powered by their own 1000 watt amp. the way i am constructing the box most of the weight sits in the middle of the car. so the balance shouldnt be affected too much. not too much that I couldnt correct though.
If you want lightweight, dont go audiobahn amps, those are chromed out, fans yielded heavy mofos, and not worth the cost. For a nice amp look into
http://www.respl.com and instead of audiobahns, look into their SE line of subs. 2 10" SE's took 2 12" JL W3v2's.
For a lightweight amp though, you really cant do much, amps(big ones) that are reliable are usually going to weigh a hefty amount.
Lightweight subs though, the alpine type r, the Mag d2 -32lbs. and some low end JL's. Even the eD K's. As for light boxes, fiberglass, or if you REALLY are a stickler for weight, use .5" MDF wood as opposed to .75". But thats only if youre running around 800w or so, and if you resin the inside of the box.

Those guys's low end lines are pretty lightweight.
If I can help with other audio questions lemme know. Im a mod over at caraudio.com.
Hope I helped.
