May be a bit of subject, but didn't a tree fall on Dr Ken's Q?

But like Q45tech said in another post, I should have had AT LEAST a year warning, of audible sounds... If you include the ticking, I had 3 months... If you include the knocking, I had 2 miles... The first time I noticed the oil light was about 8mo ago

I didn't know that there was a mechinism in your car that would tell you the engine was about to blow a year before it happens. It started to tick, then blew up. That's how things are. It doesn't have to tell you a year in advance its gonna die.

I'd say the oil light was the warning... repeated WOT runs with oil starvation could have sped something up - but I for one love having videos of it's last glorious runs! Sort of like Jimmy Buffett's line "I'd rather die while I'm living, than live while I'm dead"

But again like Fred said... In this particular case, if it didnt happen while we raced, it would happened when I got home or when I was on the way home...

He was very sympathetic (as much as a guy could be ).. Maybe you've forgotten this, but he hasnt had the best of luck with his Qs... 2 total failures due to guides, trannies and so on...... And quite possibly in a worse financial situation than I was in..

Aside from learning a lot on the NICO forum I have added paranoia of the next thing that will happen to my Q. I here every little noise and keep up on the maintenance. The past 2 years or so, before I was on NICO, I was a bit of a slacker when it came to maintenance. Now that this thing happened to Wes, I look at my oil light. It turns off right away when I crank it. The slightest ticking at startup, but 2 seconds later the ticking is gone. I warm up the car when I can, and do those oil changes. I'm due, soon when I get my leaky PS hoses, tie rod boots and belts. I need this car to last me 3 years, at least until the Bimmer gets paid off, so I'll do my maintenance, cross my fingers, and keep the WOT to a minimum.

WEENIE!!!

Dennis has said that he redlines his car all the time, and obviously if you keep up with it the VH45DE handles it VERY well...

AZhitman I KNOW drives his car like hell all the time... If I were to have a known strong VH45 with good internals, Id see NO PROBLEM redlinging it daily or so for life....

Absolutely. Your engine didn't die because of anything you did - it was the poor maintenence before you bought it.

Hey, I kick it in the Q every once in a while. Bad traffic and potholes keep me from redlining on my morning drive to work. Local urban 25mph roads. I'm lucky I get it over 3000rpm going to work. Get me out of a toll booth on the highway, then I put the pedal to the metal.

I sometimes want to change schools because my commute is less than a mile. I seldom get a chance anymore to enjoy a WOT run.

When you think about the dual roles the Q was designed for it turned out to be a most excellent motor car. Role 1 was to chauffer yakuza to clubs on the Ginza. Role 2 was for doctors to show off at the country club. Not exactly WOT territory. Now I don't drag race mine, it's got two purposes: 1 - get my wife to Trader Joe's and back and 2- make runs to wine country. It does the first in comfort and safety even on crap streets; it does the second at an average speed (including pee stops) of 61mph over 376 miles on roads ranging from interstates to two lane country gravel lanes. There is STILL nothing built today that can accommodate similar use like an early Q with mods and proper care. There is no telling what Wes' Q went thru before he got it. That it went out running hard is ok.john

You're not walking through the snow, uphill both ways? I am truly shocked.

Every Q needs A few minutes at 100 mph per week.

just to keep the combustion chambers clean.
