.......gun. After swapping in Evan's fan clutch that he so graciously donated to me, it's still making the same noises. I guess what's the next thing in toward the motor that could be failing? Again, it must be a bearing out of whack that allows the rad. fan to get off axis and strike the shroud. It visibly is deflecting about an inch. It doesn't do it all the time, but it is getting worse. Could it be a failing crank pulley? Maybe the harmonic balancer is cracked? Is there a servicable bearing underneath the crank pulley. I guess the next step would be to replace the crank pulley. Anyone?

Did you tighten all of the nuts?

Also, it may be the water pump itself that is misaligned.

The fan is connected to the clutch, the clutch to the pump, the pump to the block. Don't see how it could be anything else. Can you expand on "it visibly is deflecting about an inch?"

Oh yeah, the water pump is in there too.... If you look at the fan from above, it basically looks like it is three times its actual width because there is so much side to side play. The fan itself is new and is definately not the culprit. Yes the bolts are tight.

Sorry to hear that didn't work

Just last week I saw a fan bracket break on an LS400 causing the exact same symtoms you stated. If you look in the exact same area on the Q, it's the waterpump.

Damn I wish I kept my spare crank pulley.....

I'm confused. What's rocking besides the fan? Sure it's not the fan itself? Wiggle things by hand.

The crank pulley is only connected to the fan by the belt, so it's not a factor.

Had a Ford minivan do this. It never leaked! When I took it apart the steel impeller ate the Sh** out of the pump and filled the cooling system with aluminum flakes. When I drained the rad. it looked like green boat paint. Did I mention it never leaked !?

Flush it real good.

Yeah, after thinking about that, the crank pulley didn't make sense to me either. I guess it's water pump time. Unfortunately, as soon as I get this issue resolved, I'll be selling the car. My remodeling business is taking off and I'll be needing another van very very soon.
