Factory exhaust is like 1.87" ridicliously small for zero noise, so we decided to do a dual 2.25" into a 2.25: Stamped X-pipe, out to Dual 4x9x12 stainless mufflers, out to a Dual In/Single out 5x8x18(i think 18") Stainless Muffler with dual 3" double wall tips. In retrospect the 3" tips are to small for the opening and i think i'll trade out for dual 4" later on.

Sound is identical to stock through-out RPM band, zero resonance, no drone. DOHC V-8's are quiet beasts when run with the factory 4 converters. Its only noticable when driving like through a neighborhood at like 10-15mph under load, but even then its not even loud or anything. Kinda wish we had run dual resonators at the rear instead of the 5x8, might have been a slight bit louder. Just enough to hear a growl, but not to have any resonance.

We didnt get to do any dyno's before or after that day as they were tuning my buddies 450Whp S/C LS1 GTO. But, i wasnt concerned with power, just gtting a little growl and removing alot of the backpressure from the factory exhaust.

Not sure if it feels faster, its a 4500lbs car, even if the exhaust made 15whp it would be barely noticable. What I do notice however is that the car is more eager to go, just off the line I dont have to easy onto the pedal as much to get it moving. the exhaust seems to have made the engine more compliant in moving the vehicle at all speeds.

sorry this ones kinda blurry.

very clean, nice job.....since you didn't post a before pic, I crawled under the beast (02Q45s) in my suit to see what you'd replaced!!!! I'll send you the bill!!!!!!

lol

I may be confused, you said single out ....any thoughts on the last muffler being a dual in/ dual out ?any idea on total price for the job ?Is it possible to have too little backpressure?

thanks guys1

oppps, i meant dual out. my bad. dual in/dual out. Its certianly possible to remove too much backpressure.

the negative side effects to that are : increased noise (drone/ressonance usually) and decreased bottom-end. Most NA motors need some form of backpressure. If you build the exhaust right you can use things like the x-pipe to create exhaust scavenging. that allows you to run a somewhat smaller diameter than one might assume (2.25" dual as opposed to 2.5" Dual) especially on motors that have virtually no work to them

I think what we created is the perfect balance of increased performance (little) with no annoying increase in exhaust noice. These DOHC 8's arent known for making bottom end power when doing exhausts, most gains are going to be realized on the topend. But i dont really care about that either.

If you were to go to a exhaust shop and have it mandrel-bent and build using the same components i figure $300-400 in mufflers, $90 in tips. $100-200 in tubing, $100 X-pipe and about $200 labor. So all-in-all and $800 on the bottom end i'd say.

but I work at magnaflow, so i simply paid the head of R&D at my tech center 200 clams to do one in his spare time.

Looks nice, and I'd be interested in hearing a sound clip if you could make one.

I wonder if I can find the old link to the Y33 with an exhaust ... I'll have to hunt it down.

Here's an X pipe on a G50.

that one looks to have had its secondary cats removed as well. that should beefen the sound up a bit. I'll get some video this weekend.

Yeah and it's got some headers as well, Rob's Q (rsiwicki). Very mean/throaty sound.

(SOrry about the threadjack Louis)

As I recall from Rob's (rsiwicki) posts, they're one off's, but the shop that made them may have the specs??

Maybe Rob will see this and comment.

lol!!! Yes...I still watch NICO like a hawk even though I don't post much.

The headers are a one-off and the shop does not have the specs. It was too difficult to build a jig around all the crazy bends. There were done July 1st 2004.....almost 2 years ago (20,000+ miles) and still look great and shinny. There are a couple others on here trying to get some headers for the Q built to be reproduced.....at the very least you can punch out your 4 CAT's.

btw....Louis....very nice exhaust and I like your choice of x-pipe and mufflers as they look very similiar to my setup.

thanks guys.

been toying with the idea of unbolting the rear 2 cats and run straight pipe just to see how that affects tone.

When you remove the cats, it doesnt really make it much louder but it does make it a lot more raspy.. it sounds pretty nasty

Only when the headers were added did the sound get raspy. When I had just the secondary major cats removed it did not sound raspy at all, but when I had the OEM exhaust manifolds removed and headers made it was a world of difference. Almost NASCAR like when I am decelerating and leave it manually in 1st gear you can really hear the rasp.

Hell yeah! That muffler and tips is EXactly what I want. Maybe angled tips, but dual 3" like that. So how can I get just the muffler and tips and just have my local shop put it on for me? Please let me know, exhaust is my next and last (until I change wheels again, lol) mod.

Sounds good. Is it all brand new? Should open the sound up after awhile of use.

Do those years have tcs? no tire spin on launch

I think TCS is useless for the Y33 at launching. I couldn't get my Y33 to spin on a sticky road. Need more power!

I can get you a set of those ! If you make me a G50 exhaust :P

I went to get my custom exhaust done and the muffler shop wanted 850 bux to make me a set of downpipes with my own Catco cats, and then catback piping with my supplied Magnaflow mufflers. So basically all they needed to do it flanges, bend some pipes and weld on some hangers...

BTW what part # is that for the DUAL in and dual out rear muffler you used ? I been trying to find something like this for a while for my Q and all I can find is dinky 2.25 single inlet mufflers.

I might get the same exhaust Rob has, from BRM- but they want 850 +shipping and I NEED it soon as my car is due for emissions.

Thats a great looking exhaust, and hopefully the vid will work on my home PC.

BTW, whats the purpose of the X pipe? Ive seen it on other V6/V8s, but why not keep each bank separate from the headers to the rear muffler?

I'll get the exact part numbers we used when i get to work and post it tonight.

The purpose of the X is to create a) create a venturi and increase exhaust scavening between ports. b) They help to quite down exhausts.

typically they make power and reduce associated noise.

How about getting your colleagues to post some audio/video clips on Magnaflow's site?
