another exciting night of fun and mystery. woohoo. I got in my car at my friends house to go to the bp (someone called in a bomb threat on my friends car, long story) and all of a sudden there was like no power. btw i drive a 91 sentra 1.6. i figured it was a slipping clutch and like a dumbass decided to try to make it to my house anyways. then it started making a noise like there was lasers or something shooting out from my trans... crazy *** noise. so i was like, holy crap thats not good, i pull into someones driveway to turn around. now it wont go into reverse. great. i put it in neutral so me and my buddy could push it into the street; it still wont move. the wheels will not move, locked. crazy. great. so after 10 minutes of struggling, i get it into reverse. i pull out of the driveway, and this is where it gets weird. reverse is working fine. as soon as i let off the gas in reverse, the front tires lock up. i got it halfway down the street and my gf shows up so she can follow me back to my house. its in third gear, at like maybe 2000rpm, and BOOM loudest f-ing noise ive ever heard and it pops out of gear . now, i pull over, shut the car off, sitand think. kick my car a few times, and start it up. as soon as i let the clutch out, in neutral, the car stalls. wtf. its in like 5th or somting. idk. now that i know my trans is screwed, i try to launch it in whatever crazy gear its in because it takes a good 5 mins to get it into any other gear and then its stuck in that gear. the clutch just about lights on fire, there's cltch smoke puring out, craziness. i call the tow company, they tell me theres a 3- to 4 hour wait for a tow. DAMMIT! the only way the car will move is with the clutch in, so i tell my gf to sit in the car while we roll it back to my friends house with her foot on the clutch. now when i start it the trans makes a crazy repetitve whacking noise like theres something big rattling around in there. so now not only do i need a new clutch but probably a new trans and flywheel too, its so screwed. so i was just wondering does anyone have any clue as to what mightve happened? thanks, i hoped you enjoy my story.

I'd say your transmission is toast.

Typically, if you hear noises that you can't immediately identify continuing to try to drive is a bad idea.

yeah i got that now... i was in a bad neighborhood though... lets just call it a racial neighborhood... i wanted to get the hell outta there. it suckedi know a local guy that does trans work, he'll hook me up for like 200 bucks. i should be ok. im just wondering, there was a lot of clutch smoke coming up from me being retarded... do u think i need a new flywheel maybe it might be warped? idk im just wondering for now but im gonna let my guy get under there and poke around. Hes good like that.

It might be warped, I wouldn't be too surprised if your whole transmission was shot. Have the guy take a look at it and let you know, assuming you trust him. There's no way to know for certain just reading your description of the events.

No i know, i was just wondering what people thought of this. I can pretty much guarantee that my trans is shot though, the way it was acting was just so insane. The shifter would be in neutral but the car was actually still in gear, and then when i would go in reverse, when i let off the gas the tires would lock up. It just seems like a good idea to replace everything that mightve been screwed up, especially because im going to colorado in january. I dont want to get stuck halfway there in like 10 degree weather. maybe ill just fly out. anyways i was just wondering what you guys think, is this crazy or what.

Also, when i start (i have to keep the clutch in or it will stall) there is a nasty clicking noise coming from the trans) and i was wondering if maybe this sounds like a linkage problem? i wouldn't know because this is the first manual tranmission i've owned, so any input is helpful.

Where exactly is it coming from? Is it at the shifter, the linkage, or somewhere within the transmission itself?

The sound comes from the trans as far as i can tell, its not real loud inside the car, but with the hood popped its real loud and scary sounding. So i dont think its the shifter. could be the linkage...Also from outside the car its loud. IDK man, i really havent gotten a chance to inspect it yet, its still at my friends house. i should be getting it towed to my local transmission guy's house friday or saturday so i can probably give you guys and update soon. And you wanna know what the ****tiest thing is? I just bought springs and shocks, gauges, and a header, and just got 2.25 inch exhaust installed from the cat back. This is the first car i've actually had a chance to do some decent bolt-ons with, and it breaks. i have bad luck with trannys. I just hope its something simple, like the linkage snapped or something. Man this is lame. anyway thanks for the interest. I love the internet

tuff luk with the transmission, sorry bout that. if yur clutch goes out in the future again on sumpin yu can try shuttin it off, placeing in gear and starting again. sounds like yur trans is totally screwed tho this time. for bout 100 buks yu could get a book and enuf tools to change trans yurself if yu incline towards manly things like that. let us know what know what happens with yur trans.

so this is what has happened since then. it had been sitting at my friends house for like a week or so, since jiffy lube changed my gear oil like a day before that while i was at the mall, or it mightve been the same day i dont remember, i decided to check out the fluid and everyhting. reason i didnt change it myself is b/c im lazy and didnt have the manual at that point i only had the car for a few weeks. i bought the haynes manual, which is a ****ty manual but does have some helpful information. i drained out the fluid and like maybe a quart of black **** came out, along with a crapload of metal goo all over the magnet, like an enormous amount. i was pissed as fock. i went to jiffy lube to ask them wtf. they gave me a customer service numer to call, and i did, and then got my car towed to the local garage. jiffy lube guy told me to do this, and have them only diagnose what happened and not fix anything, and then if the garage diagnoses the problem being started by lack of fluid or the wrong fluid, they'll send someone out to check it out and then if they come to the same conclusion they'll fix it and everyhting. my only concern is what if the guy they send out, who im sure will be on jiffy lubes payroll, says some bs about how this isnt jiffy lubes fault. btw its a recently rebuilt trans so idk this is all so crazy. and then the garage tells me that oh well since its basically stuck in the parking spot, they're sure the trans is toast, and since i told them what happened they're like "ok well the problem is from lack of fluid if you say so". they want my car outta there b/c im not asking them to fix anything im just asking for a diagnosis, and you have to stand on the clutch and push it to get it moving and even then theres still resistance. im gonna go there tomorrow and ask them to do it right and everything so this is all legit. but until then, thats whats hapened so far.
