I'm going to pick up the '96 240sx tommorow, 74k miles, 7 grand. I took it to a mechanic today, actually the local nissan dealer, the list of stuff they put together on it totaled 2600 dollars...well, they were basically out for my money. It does definately need a new muffler, and soon some new back shocks, neither of which are necessary immediately (Muffler's outer skin's rusted through, inside felt okay)...also needs new brake pads and a rotor or two turned. overall it's in nice shape, the dealer wanted to sell me (and install of course) new tension rods, an o2 sensor, a muffler for 250 more than i can get it for, 425 worth of brakes, maybe fix the small oil leak and the timing chain rattling for 1200...i'll fix the timing chain pretty soon, and definately the exhaust, other than that it's in real good shape. By the way, what the heck are tension rods?ast

I don't know where you live or anything but that seems like a lot for a 240 that needs work.

Mine is a 96 base model which needed absolutly no work and it had 78k on it, and I got it for 5600.

For 7k plus repairs you could (almost, if not) have a swapped S13.

well, after thought, basically all the car needs is a muffler and possibly some new shocks in the back, other than that it's sound. I'll probably do the timing chain sooner or later, but all cars need that, other than that it seems cool

i had 104k and mine was a 95 and hardly any of that stuff was needed. I don't need a new exhaust but i'm getting one anyways, and i gotta do my brakes too.

Dont get the tension rods. Nismo makes hard rubber tension rod bushings that will replace your soft factory bushings. Nissan doesnt sell the stock bushings seperately of the rods, which is why that is so expensive. The Nismo bushings are $75 for the pair from http://www.courtesynissan.com

Is this a 240SX "SE" model or just a basic 240?

7K for a '96 requiring all this additional work does not seem like a particularly good deal to me - this is assuming that it is an "SE" version.

A reasonably well looked after Nissan engine should be as smooth as silk after 78k miles (not to mention the rest of the car either).

Before you buy this look for any obvious signs that the speedo and binnacle (housing) have not been tampered with.

If this is in fact the genuine mileage I suspect that it has had a very hard abused life and may not be your best bet for a troublefree car.

Before I bought my 240SX I looked at a '97 Hyundai Tiburon with 76k miles on it.... I think 276k would have been closer......;)
