I think that was part of it, but the conservative styling of car (excluding the later addition of, uh, nostrils) and Pontiac's image, or lack thereof, was a big part.
When the car hit dealerships, it was lacking a bit in power as you said, and didn't have the retro styling that worked so well for the Mustang (not a bad thing, necessarily). Muscle car freaks who loved the old GTO seemed to be pretty disappointed with the looks of the car at the time, and I think the rest of the public just looked elsewhere for their sporty coupes at the GTO's original sticker.
Very nice car, though. I'd love to have one. I do actually think the car looks better in its Holden "suit", but other than the nose holes the Pontiac certainly isn't a bad looking car.
Now, shouldn't you be working on your mullet?
