Hey,I have a problem. I have a drift comp that I will be in this summer and i still have the stock open dif in my 91 s13 240sx. I need suspension work done(coilovers) before i can do an LSD and the coilovers are going to be expensive, as most are, and I will not have enough cash for a LSD before. I have heard about welding diffs for drifting, but what I heard is that it is pretty ghetto and causes "hopping" around corners when not drifting. Any Advice????? thanks

The welded spiders certainly is ghetto and is unsafe on the street because of the hopping.

Look for a ’90-96 300ZX N/A.

First thing, DO NOT get the twin turbo diff, it's got a different gear ratio in it and it will really slow your car down (3.86). The NON turbo has the same ratio as the 240 (4.06). The 300ZX uses the 2 bolt rear cover so if you own an S13 you'll need to switch it. The biggest problem with the 300ZX is that the output flanges are different. They look like a '5 star' flange where the 240SX uses 3 sets of 2.

listed here are some R200V VLSDs that will work:

Infiniti J30 95+ , No mods needed, but might need driveshaft that's used because of ABS sensor Infiniti J30 pre 95 , Needs new output flanges Infiniti M30 , No mods Infiniti Q45 , No mods

Just making a correction here, in my experience LSD from the Infinity q45, have the same axle bolt pattern as the 300zx Twin Turbo. Very beefy, good if you're running a torqui RB. But not recommended for stock or Sr20. Very low gearing, and you need lots of ponies to get a good launch.

So to make the Q45 LSD work on the 240sx, you need the axles as well. And you need to switch your cover, if you're swaping it on a S13. 97-98 kouki have the same cover. But you need a passengers side axle from the Q45 and drivers side axle from the 300zx TT. To make them work, also take into account the extra length due to the ABS sensor. You might also need a abs drive shaft.

90-94 J30 LSD >> 89-94 240sx you need LSD,AXLES,BOLTS, BUSHINGS, SWITCH DIFF COVER.

5-94 to 96 J30>> 89-94 240sx ONLY LSD, BUSHINGS, AND DIFF BOLTS. SWITCH DIFF COVER. YOU DO NOT NEED AXLES.

5-94 to 96 J30>>> 97-98 240sx kouki. LSD, BUSHINGS, BOLTS, YOU DO NOT NEED TO SWITCH YOUR DIFF COVER. Koukis come with 2 bolts on the cover like the j30s.

That's my experience, i don't know if zenkis come with 2 bolts like the koukis or 4 like the pig nose and chukis.

I have never experienced Wheel Hoping with my welded diff, I have run it for 3 years now with No problems.

The rear end is going to be a personal opinion, Everyone here is going to tell you something diff, But you just need to experience them both to really know what you like. Weld is Free!!! Why not try it first?

Thanks for the update on the Q45. Never actually did a Q45 install into an S13 but good info if I ever do one.

I dont suggest the Welded Diff, the 240 I just picked up has a welded diff and it sucks during normal driving. ive owned the car for a week and already had 3 friends tell me my car bounces aroung corners. the inner wheel jumps up and down off the ground and its really annoying.

the owner before me had no idea what was up with it and told me its always had a wheel hop problem while cornering. first time i drove it i realized it had a welded diff.

Welded diffs are hit or miss. Get a good welder to weld the spider gears and make sure you seal it good w/ the OEM paper gasket or a bunch of gasket maker. and fill it w/ 80w90w. Dont forget this step: Check for leaks. my last welded diff locked on me due to a leak I didn't know existed until I heard squeaks and sudden lock-age. My opinion. welded diff is the poor man's 2-way. but it will make daily driving suck. and use common sense when driving in rain.. don't down shift into a turn while going on an offramp. Ive been to 8 events w/ welded and 1 w/ vlsd. I dont like the vlsd because it will unlock when you dont want it to (when you ease off the throttle to weight transfer)good luck man

Dont waste your time with a vlsd. I would weld it after coilovers. I love my welded diff, never had an issue with it. But it takes good susp to control it. If you have weak sauce factory spring rates and im gonna guess blown struts, it will wheel hop like a mofo.

I was going to say the exact words "don't waste your time w/ a vlsd" but I know there are people who will disagree.. In the rain I liked the vlsd..but thats about it. during the dry it was unpredictable. I really like the welded, but if you dont know how to drive it will be very dangerous come wet roads..
