People do it.. Sucks for daily driving (when turning two wheels spin at different speed) but good for drag if that's your main purpose.

not worth it unless youre only going in a straight line 100% of the time. go to howstuffworks and see how a differential works, then answer your own question.

I can just imagine making left and right turns and u-turns. Ouch for the tires.

If you're seriously into drifting, a welded differential will be the best bang-for-the -buck mod you can do. But it will reduce daily driveability quite a bit because you lose a tight turning radius when going through parking lots(you understeer), and you wear your tires quicker.

If I was a big drifter, I would do it. I'd rather weld my diff for free than pay $800+ for a clutch type lsd, which is nearly the same thing.

It's all up to you. There are serious benefits, but also serious drawbacks. For what it's worth, the serious houston drifters all have welded differentials.

I just installed a welded diff into my friends 95 240sx w/sr20det and think he picked up almost a whole second in the quarter mile, with better driving. Car is kinda jumpy around corners, but it definitely feels alot faster than before. The sides of the tires are getting chewed up. We put it in for the weekend at the track but he hasnt called me yet to put the open diff back in. Must really like it.

Anyone concerned with what happens when the welds break?

yeah, definately. i have been wondering about that since install. there are many things that could happen when it breaks. from locking up the rear end to being a normal open diff. haha

I would be surprised if a bit of weld didn't jamb it up and cause a kaboom, and probably it locking up. And what about the trans?

it's fine but you'll end up spending more money on the tires int he long run rather than just getting a real metal clutch diff.
