I'm planning on getting my differential welded within the next couple weeks and want to know if it is worth it at this point in time. currently i am running bolt ons on the ka24de and i've done extensive weight reductions that has helped me get a best ET of 14.843 so far. I'm launching at a bit less than 2000rpm with an auto transmission and experience only a chirp or so on a bad day. will a welded diff take any time off my 1/4 mile time even if im getting traction with an open diff? i'm thinking i'll be able to launch at a higher rpm like 2500 with plenty of traction with it welded. I'm eventually going to weld it sooner or later....kinda just wondering if im gonna benifit now or not. thanks for dealing with my lameness.

I'm actually putting my welded diff on right now. I don't do drag racing, I plan to use it for drifting, but I've been told that it does give you way better launches and acceleration.

the only thing a welded diff is good for is drag racing or drifting.

if you're running your car for time, then a welded diff should helplower your times if you can get the hang of launching with it in anautomatic.

since its always locked, both wheels are always putting power to the ground at the same constant speed (unlike an open diff) which is whatmakes it ideal for driving in a straight line.

I sent my guts to the guy, people say he's really good at welding diffs, supposedly he uses one on his 400hp drift FD. He says he's done well over a hundred of them, and none have broken so far.

Welding the diff is not a very good idea!!!, expecially on a street driven car, you'll end up tearing up your diff and probally the transmission. Just buy a VLSD from a SE S-14 or a HICAS S-13.

Why would you tear up your diff? If done right a welded diff is pretty damn good. But I've heard its loud in low speeds.

VLSD's rob power, in a similar way as an automatic rob's power.

If you're just going for a hole-shot, a spool/wielded differential will be your best bet.If you plan on driving your car in the winter, wielding your differential is a horrible idea.

You live in New York.

i would think that a welded would give you better traction in the snow? as for it breaking, depends on how well you weld it. breaking the transmission is unlikely, you have a better chance of snapping the rear half shafts.

Not on turns. When you turn with an open diff and even with a LSD the inside tire spins at a different speed then the out side tire. When you weld a diff shut they both spin the same exact time so the outside tire (I think its the outside tire) will skidd a little bit in a turn and if theres snow/ice it will skid a lot and you'll spin.

well the car is mostly track drivin....drag mainly and drifting sometimes(getting tired of the inconsistancy of an open diff), i'm probably gonna take it to an offroading based shop that welds differentials for rock crawlers and such. the car will never be driven in snow or rain. the only time rain would hit it is if i got stuck in it on the way home or something, or if it just rained i might take it out for a spin. i drive it pretty much every other day...and its usually to take it somewhere to get a part, to the track, or to the boulevard. im gonna get it welded next week hopefully, and the next check i get i'm running to the junkyard to pick up an extra diff in case i dont like it welded or something goes wrong. I'm hoping it helps me shaves a couple tenths of a second of my 1/4 mile.
