I'm new on the forums and I recently purchased an RB20 front clip. I welded the differential because I knew it could hold up the stock KA SOHC and I wanted to do a little amatuer sliding, but I was wondering if I will need to swap in a KAAZ or an actual diff or will it hold up for a while? I have not installed the motor yet and I am trying to do all the purchasing before it is swapped. Thanks for any information in advance.

Of course the Welded will hold the RB's power... Unless you did it yourself and don't know what you're doing. My friend's welded (by SDP Luke) holds up fine with his RB25... I love my Kaaz tho

rb20's dont make that much power man. yes welded is fine

but a real diff is a MUCH better aid for drifting. trust me

I want to eventually get KAAZ LSD but right now funds are tight and I wanted to know if I had to get it before I did the swap because I don't want it to just bust out of nowhere. My friend has welded diff in his FC with a 1JZ swap and he busted it in his second run on the track.

I dont see why the diff wouldnt hold if you welded it properly. The biggest thing about weldidng a diff it cleaning the snot out of it and not getting it too hot when welding it. Cast gets brittle and cracks when it gets real hot. Lots of drifters around here use welded diffs or 2 ways lsd's. My s13 im drifting this year is rocking a welded open I did my self. I soak mine in carb cleaner or a parts washer. Then on the spots in welding I used acitone to clean off all the oil for shure. I hear snowbowl cleaner works real good to clean them too but never tryed it. Then I stick weld the diff. The trick is not to heat up one spot too much. I have this gell spray I used on mine that is used for welding sheetmetal it pulls the heat out of the steel so it wont warp when you weld it. You have to have a cool fan blowing on the stuff for it to work real good.If you weld one properly I dont see it ever breaking.

my buddy runs a welded diff on his s13 rb25 car for awhile now and beats the snot out of it. Holds up fine. As said earlier, its how it was welded.

I personally rock a Tomei 2way and love it every moment of the drive. But then again, i don't drift.

the welded diff is a bit more harsh for daily driving; tirewears is twice the rate; expect to change out tires faster

he said he is drifting too, i dont think tire wear is going to be the determining factor in diff selection

Yeah I get a hook up on used tires 10-20$ a tire for my 15's and we have a manual tire changer(old school style). So tires isn't an issue for me and the guys who welded the diff are sick welders so I trust that it won't break.

i personally like the welded diff with the squeeling around corners..lol...ive had a welded diff on my car and havent had a single problem with it until one of the welds broke and shot out of the back case...goes to show that the welding IS a critical part in having a long lasting welded diff...i love the fact that its cheap and stronger then some vlsd rears...my buddy bought a vlsd rear end (broke it in) and blew it out doin his first burnout..

I have welded 3 others and personally run a welded Diff in my drag car! Never had a problem! If you broke a weld diff then it was welded poorly. If its welded properly you will break the axles or U-Joints before the actual rear end. At least in my experience. I also like the way it handles and drives. The squealing of the tires around corners just puts music to my ears!

We have lots of guys at our events rocking welded diffs without having any issues. A lot of them are DD cars as well.

i dont think ur rb will blow it up if a 700hp ls1 240 didnt. iv run the same welded diff in all 4 differnt cars. I had a 400 hp ka-t held up fine, 300hp sr no problems, and now its on my rb25. and its fixing to get put in another car along with the built rb25. Iv broke countless axles twisted 12 drive shafts. full boost lauches on 12 inch slicks(that was the the night i keep twisting drive shafts and breaking axles) i had a blast changing that stuff. worst part about it was im not even a drag racer im a drifter we just threw the slicks on there for fun lol.

I charge Nothing, just take it out and bring it down to my house. Takes about 30 mins to weld.
