this guy is selling me a 1990 240sx with a 1992 KA motor in it. Its 1600$ and it has 176k on the motor, he welded the diff, and made it a possy or w/e. Im new and I really need help on figuring if this is good or bad or wat? Is it good for drifting? Is the car worth it?

Welcome Noobert and fellow Chattanoogaian!

1600$ is ok but i wouldnt pay over 1200 for it.

Welded diff.is good for drifting.Kinda of a b**** to drive in the rain untill you learn how to drive it.

With that said,i will be welding my diff up when ever i get finished with my RB swap.

Hope that answers your questions.Maybe ill see you around who knows.lol

i recently installed a welded diff, so i can tell you by comparison the following:

a welded diff is great for drifting. the shafts are permanantly locked, so when one wheel spins, so does the other. there is no cheaper and easier mod to make your underpowered KA much easier to drift!

it really isn't all that bad for daily driving. i live in seattle, where rain is commonplace (it's raining now... ugh) and it's really not an issue as long as you know how to take it easy on corners (don't accelerate or make any sharp turns in traffic or you could be in for a surprise)

the worst/silliest part of having a welded diff is at slower speeds, like coming into your driveway/making sharp turns/uturns/in parking garages/exiting the gas station/etc. lol. you'll definitely feel and hear your tires spinning. it's pretty funny. but I'm used to it already, and it's totally worth it to me.

it's actually still pretty difficult to start drifting or sliding when you arent really trying to. i have tried a few faster corners to see just where the breaking limit is for the car to lose traction, and pretty much, if you're not trying to drift, or you're not being a ricer, you shouldn't have any problems with a welded diff.

that's about it. hope this helps

50-100 is a very good price. at most you're looking at 150-200.

i, however, bought a used, pre-welded diff from a local here in the NW. cost me 70 bucks and some gear oil for the install.

this way, i have direct bolt in goodness, and in case anything goes bad, i have my stock open diff. waiting for me.

i'd say doing what i did is the best option, and usually the cheapest. however, buying a used diff can be a little sketchy because you don't know for sure how many miles are on it unless you personally know the seller to be completely honest... that, and just by looking at a diff, you really can't tell if it's in good shape or not, since they are almost always coated in oil resin/mud/s*** from being so close to the road all their lives. just be wary and make a smart buy.

in my case, my car already has nearly 200k on it... so the chances that the welded diff i bought had about half that many miles is very high..... so it was a win/win for me!

good luck with whatever you decide!

wow 70-150 bucks WTF!!! i got mine for 30 from a local guy... but ya they are definitely worth it, as long as you dont mind plp staring at you in parking lots, and don't drive stupidly when it is raining.

Your likely better off you didn't get it. Welded diff, unpainted front bumper, good chance it was abused or even structurally damaged. Try and find yourself an unmolested car, it may cost more and more rare to find, but it will prob lead to less headaches down the road.

Just my 2 cents
