I recently installed a Skyline VLSD in my 95. But upon swapping out the covers, I noticed the VLSD was welded. Before the car was light, peppy and responded immediately but only my right passenger wheel would spin and would have to constantly buy that 1 tire due to mild negative camber and being the drive tire. Now, the car feels like driving a 2 ton truck, it jerks when I make slow turns, steering wheel is heavier and revs higher on the highway. I've read that I shouldn't have any issues with the axles but my concern is, will my clutch wear out faster than normal? I have electric FAL fans with a Koyo Radiator and the fans come with a rise in temp and I've notice they come on more often then normal. This would make sense due to the engine now turning twice the weight. This car is my weekend car. Do you guys have any regrets installing a welded diff in your cars? Please let me know. Thanks.

1st- You cant weld a VLSD

2nd- A welded diff wont make your car heat up faster or overheat. These are things your nerv's are makeing you hear. Kinda like when you are scared in the dark and you start hearing s*** you never heard before and think theres someone there. Or like when you're masterbateing with one headphone on and you keep hearing s*** and thinking someone is comming home. They arent different then normal, you are just paying more attention now.

3rd- I have had a welded diff for a couple years. daily driven. I have no problem. It doesnt change your RPM on the highway. I dont really even notice it for most driveing. I only really notice it in parking lots and slow turns. Other then that its right as rain.

also, I havent had an axel problem or anything yet. I did blow out my clutch, but i drift alot and clutch kick is my main move, so i dont attribute that brakeing to my diff.

what he said. I've been dailying a welded diff for some time now. If your car jerks around *that* much you may want to look into replacing rear end bushings. Also, did you make any other mods to your car at the time that you installed your "welded VLSD"? lol.

your rise in rpm could be attributed to the new diff you installed having a different ratio, its not the weld that did it.

i also run a welded, in my race car and it works just fine for me. i haven't broke anything and i make a lot of power, but i dont drive the car on the street at all.

i think you should just enjoy the wonders of both wheels turning at the same time and stop worrying <3

1) Well, the diff looked completely different than the Open Diff but there was a mess of weld in there.
2) Great example, love it!
3) I believe the gears are different. Before, I would be doing 70mph around 3000rpms but now I'm doing 70mph around 3300-3500rmps.
4) Clutch kick = more money handbrake = not so much
Thanks for the input!

You said 95 Skyline? You probably have a 4.36 rear gear.

a**.

If you don't want it, I'll trade you a stock 4.08 for it. :)

The only regret I had with installing a welded diff in my car was the low speed driving. It's annoying and kinda embarrassing in parking lots. People look at you like, "wtf is wrong with your car?" And if you have a girl in your car they'll be like, "your car is breaking!!!!" lol.

But I loved it otherwise. Going around corners it's night and day compared to an open diff. I'm actually gonna throw mine back in my 240 now that it's not my daily anymore. I could care less about my tires. :D

On a side note, 4:36 gears? Yikes. I get pissed off when I'm at 3K going 65mph.

I don't mind shredding my tires, I guess when I'm driving my car around and anything out if the ordinary draws concern. We invest too much money into our cars and I just want it to run perfect.
The high revs are kinda irratating and the boost is extra sensative so I turned off the boost controller for city driving.
The welds inside the diff are weren't clean or professional compared to the pics I've seen to an open welded diff.
What exactly does swapping out the ring & pinion gear entail? I'll swap out the ring & pinion gear from the open diff to get the revs back to normal. Do I have to re-shim the diff? Are there any write-ups with pics?

re shimming the diff does nothing for your final drive ratio, unless your plates are really worn and slipping constantly. you want a different gear ratio setup. you'd be better off getting a stock open 4.06 r200 (240 pumpkin) and having its gears welded. It would give you a longer gear ratio and probably be stronger if your welds really arent too good.

I'll trade you a stock 240 open diff that's been welded PLUS a stock 4.08 rear gear for that 4.36. :)
