Weld on gear inside of transmission?? s13

Hey guys i am having my transmission rebuilt in my 91 240sx. it has a ka24de transmission with an sr bell housing. this is just what i was told form the previous owner.

here is my problem. the shop that i have some of the work done on my car at, that i cant do myself tell me that i need a new transmission because a certain gear has a weld on it?? im not going to be able to make it to the shop to look at it for a few days here so im wondering if any of you have rebuilt one and know of this?? they are trying to sell me a new transmission and i want to be sure that this gear isnt welded like this for some strange reason?

sorry i dont have much info on what it looks like or what gear but i havnt had time to go check it out.
