Just got the 96Q back from replacing leaking welch plugs.Total bill was $1600.00. Does that seem to be a fair price. Those plugs must have been buried deep.

Not at all.

Someone saw you coming...

Easier just to clean them well and put a skim of JB Weld in the crevice... Not that I advocate halfassery with a Q, but that's half the value of the car!

Car: lots of unique hot rods, and customs, with modern engines, and a good truck to pull the trailer.

Sorrym, But In my opinion, you got Screwed. Did they offer KY at the payclerk? There is no reason it would involve that much labor, we are talking around 1200 or more of just labor right?

See the other thread he posted... I'm not conviced that we're all talking about the same plugs. There are the block drain plugs, but aren't there some press fit plugs elsewhere on the block? Those may be more buried than the block drains.

In any case you've paid the invoice... the work is done... might as well move on knowing your Q is safely on the road and not prone to overheating at any moment!

He is talking about the "freeze plugs" on backside of engine block....designed to pop out of the block if the coolant freezes in order to keep block from cracking.

The work order on this states "Replaced both Rear Cylinder Head Welch Plugs Labor $1595.00 Plugs $5.71 each. When I had the cross member replaced at an independant service they pointed out some plugs with caked on green stuff them. Not aware if these are the same plugs. Infiniti says plugs were actively leaking. But 12 hours of labor? Maybe different plugs hard to reach.Guess I'm just a dumb FK

freeze plug = welch plug = core plug

Did your block freeze or why did you have to replace them?

You know, if all these plugs had truly failed and indluded the welch plugs on the back of your heads, I think it would have been less expensive to just pull the engine and replaced everything. But not at this dealer.

Why was the front cross member replaced?

Rear cross- member replaced not front. REplaced because they were actively leaking.

I learned something new today. Was wondering, thought welch was ones in side of block, not back.

Either way, the labor is intense, Granted it is not easy, But if I charged someone more then 500 labor for doing them, I'd feel like a thief. Pulling motor would hav been quicker, and allowed inspection of everything. Rear xmember? what was leaking? I am guessing the pressed bushings on diff crossmember. That make sense.

Was it leaking antifreeze, well, best of luck

You mean the rear subframe. Quite a different animal.
