Weird white substance on the A/C controls of 2008 hatchback?

Wtf??

It looks like cocaine or something. No, I haven't been snorting up in my car.

Only in the house.

jkjk. But seriously, what is this? It wasn't there when I got the car used, and it was fairly new when i got it (16k miles) and I've only had it for a few months. What is it and more importantly how would I go about removing it?

I suspect some cleaning compound is atacking the decals on the controls.
