weird unresponsive gas pedal thing

Today I got to use my ABS for the first time, and it worked great. When I tried to accelerate afterward, though, it was as if the car didn't recognize that I was stepping on the gas pedal. Then it lurched forward and the rpms shot up. I figured I had just stepped on the pedal weird since I was a bit shaken from having to slam on the breaks in the first place. But every time I tried to accelerate after that, it did the same thing.Got to my destination, parked the car, came back after about 45 minutes and everything worked fine for the rest of the night. I drove about 50 more miles and not one problem.

Anyone experience anything like this or have any idea what it could be?

What kind of transmission do you have? I have a manual and haven't experienced that problem at all. First things that come to mind are that the brake hardware somehow got stuck or something freaked the transmission out.

Campersand - you have the CVT if I recall, right?

I've heard one or two other complaints quite some time ago of the CVT not feeling "right" for a while after panic braking. I wonder if the TCU mis-reads the sudden drop in speed as being a fault of some sort?

Yeah, I have the CVT. I'm hoping it's something like that and not a mechanical problem, 'cause I'm about to make a trip up to Vancouver, BC tonight. I'm getting my first oil change when I get back so I can just ask them about it then.

Try to reproduce the problem by panic braking in a safe spot, and seeing if the problem re-occurs. If so then you can reproduce the problem for the dealer to diagnose, and if not then it's not worth worrying about.

That may be one of the funnier statements I've heard on here.

I think the ECU developed a fault in the CVT and didn't re-engage the "clutch/torque converter" properly or went into some type of limp mode. The dealer should be able ot interface wiht the ECU and see if there were any errors recently.

though strange, it's rather true. Despite having a bashed rear bumper, hatch, shattered tail lights, etc... my V drove just fine to the body shop after being mauled by a Ford truck. Actually, had I not just BEEN in the accident, and had I been blindfolded when getting in the car, I might not have known anything was wrong with it.

Hey, just a thought, I read in the service manual that the CVT control computer will automatically go into a emergency mode. I have experience with this from a previous car that had an emergency mode "we called it limp home mode". If a panic stop occurs or there is an internal problem of another type the computer limits the performance to protect from further damage. It is not related to the ABS. The same thing would happen to a non-ABS model or a 4-speed. The inertia sensor feature is common on a lot of vehicles some even have inertia sensors that actually turn off the engine and have to be reset and the sensitivity varies from one manufacturer to another. I am not 100% on this being what you experienced but it sounds like what I felt in mine. -Chris

I too have had this happen in a couple situations.

After hard breaking... and after coasting at high speed down a hill.

It's as if the CVT goes into Neutral and doesnt shift back into gear when the gas is reapplied.

Yeah, that's pretty much what it felt like.

Santoro, that explanation makes sense, if the Versa is indeed equipped with something like that. Seems kind of dumb for Nissan to do though, as it took away a lot of the control of the car and actually made things more dangerous for me. Step on the pedal...nothing happens for a couple seconds...give it more gas...then the car lurches forward. Doesn't seem like the smartest way to deal with something like that.
