I just recently bought this fastback and need to smog it. Before I do that, I decided to make sure I correct anything I can (such as timing) so I can make sure I'm close to passing as possible.

I've done timing kits on the KAs before, I pretty much know what I'm doing. This one's got me stumped though...

It's a stock motor, has an upgraded MSD Blaster Coil, really good engine response. Took the TPS off, but when I took a timing light to the motor, the marks were on 5BTDC and TDC. So I took the distributor and tried to adjust it but it wouldn't allow enough advance to correct the problem. I tried adjusting the distributor 1 tooth advanced and the timing marks kicked back up but the motor wouldn't hold idle.

Now I've the idle set at 700 and the distributor back to where it was (left it at TDC). I could be mistaken, but I dont think the timing marks on the pulley are off. When I pulled the distributor, I rotated the motor by hand to #1TDC (checking the cams through the oil hole in the valve cover) and stabbed the distributor so that it was in the 9 o'clock position (close to #1 on the cap). The car pretty much responds as if the timing was set properly. Just the marks are off. So I took a vacuum gauge (can also be used to check timing) to see if my ignition is that far off. The vacuum gauge read a solid 21 HG all across, so that makes me feel like something else is making the marks retard. Could it be the MSD Coil?
