I tried using the search first, I didn't find anything, so here we go!

Ok guys, just picked up my 240 a little over a month ago after my buddy totaled my '85 Corolla GTS. Love the damn car, 78k origional miles on it, and all the options I could ask for (except leather int... ah well) However, there is something that is coming to my attention more frequently and I'm wondering if any of you guys are having this probelm. When I hit the freeway sometimes, and I'm going over 65-70 (sometimes 75, yeah yeah I know) there seems to be a weird smell coming from my car somewhere. My friends say it smells like nateral gas? That's the closest I could think of that it smelled like as well, and just yesterday driving back from VAFB my buddy said he saw *SMOKE* comeing from either under my stick shift or from the little ash-tray in the center console (I had removed it to stick a drink in there, el-cheapo cup holder) It alos seemed to be the source of the "natural gas" smell. If you guys have had any kind of problem like this, or know what it may be, I would be indoubtedly grateful. Thanks guys, and keep on driving! :ylsuper

maybe your catalytic convertor is gone. When they start to go they start to emit weird smells.

If it is similar to a rotten egg, or sulfur type of smell then it is your catalytic converter crapping out. Regardless of WHAT the smell is, you shouldn't have smoke entering the passenger compartment!! Have your cat checked... that's most likely your problem. It might be leaking, and the exhaust fumes could be getting into the car.... this is NOT SAFE!!!!

PS..... what is VAFB? (Vance maybe?)

Check your transmission fluid level. A friend of mine was driving his car with almost no gear oil in his transmission and the heat started to burn what little there was still in there, making smoke come up from under his shifter. I've also read about it happening from posts on this board. Do you know what gear oil smells like? Check it out so you dont kill your transmission.

Natural gas itself doesn't smell, but the additive they put in it does and it smells like rotten eggs.
