Weird revving sound while going downhill

I purchased an 07 V CVT hatchback in July 07. Beginning to wonder about the reliability. The car has fallen victim to the fuel pump issue other forum members have mentioned. At least I know I am not alone.

I thought I would present another issue to see if others have experienced it as well.

I have noticed that when driving down fairly steep hills with the foot off the pedal that the engine will make a revving sound as the RPMs increase to around 3. In all the cars I have driven, I have never heard such a revving sound and, I could be wrong, but I thought RPMs increase only when your foot is on the pedal.

I told the dealer mechanics about it, and they said the revving sound is within a normal range and is a result of the CVT transmission slowing down the car. Could this be right? Anyone else experience this weird revving sound?

Welcome to NicoClub! And as for the CVT transmission it in its own has many qwarks im sure you will live to deal with. I dont have the CVT but many people have said that they rev weird going down hill. I'm sure someone will hop in here with CVT to better answer your question.

It's perfectly normal. I personally don't let my car do it, I'll hit the breaks so it wont rev, but I don't think it matters much.

the V uses the CVT to regulate speed downhill so that your speed doesn't increase. think of it as engine breaking if you had a manual. The CVT will release before the forces get strong enough to damage it (unlike engine breaking in a manual) I've tested it.

If you keep pressure on the gas pedal, it won't rev. If you break sufficiently with the breaks, it won't rev as much (or at all depending on the hill and the amount of break applied).

I'd also like to note that lots of people complain about the noise level of the CVT when it goes above 3,000 rpms... But for a transmission that can cruise at 90 mph at 3,000 rpms... I'm not particularly concerned about it.
