Hey all,

Im trying to troubleshoot why I cant get my starter to crank on my S14 with RB25. The starters getting a constant 12 volts and when I test the 12 volt signal wire Im getting 12 volts at the spade plug. Once I plug the spade signal plug into the solenoid Im only getting around 5 volts and the starter is barely cranking. I cant figure where the voltage drop is coming from between when its unplugged and plugged in.

I have tried switching the clutch interlock relay with a different relay and getting the same problem

Any ideas?Thanks

run a direct power to the solenoid and see what happens, maybe the solenoid has a short?

I did notice the spade connector had a lot of buildup in it and was loose on the plug. I tried cutting the spade connector off and connecting the bare wire to the solenoid plug to test and still getting the same voltage (5 volts). I will get a new spade plug and see if it has better continuity.

I tried running direct power to the solenoid and it spins and also engages without problem

Im thinking this might be an issue with a ground wire as Im having other electrical issues. I still haven't been able to get a tach signal to the cluster or the HUD even though its getting a tach reading at the Power FC. I have tried splicing into every possible wire to get the tach signal without success. Is there supposed to be a ground going from the engine to the firewall or chassis?

Most definitely you need to ground your motor, that's the only way the starter and a lot of other sensors ground themselves. I usually run one ground from the drivers side frame rail to the drivers side of the block. Then one direct negative from the battery to the passenger frame rail which also extends to the passenger side of the block. A ground from the block to the head/intake manifold is a good idea too.

grounding is key on these engines, most of the time the factory strap works 'ok' but two or three strategically place grounds is better.

Yeah I should of thought more about grounding the engine past the stock grounds. I focused on grounding the battery well and didnt really see a lot of RB 240's with much engine grounding.

Grounding to the frame rail and the head sounds like a good idea. I think Ill ground the head to the firewall at the back of the engine and a ground from the block to a frame rail. Batteries already grounded to a frame rail in the back.

What gauge wire would be good for these grounds?
