when the temperature outside is around 30 degrees outside my car displays a light that says icy, then when i start driving it and press the brake a little hard it makes this weird noise. i been thinking about taking it to the dealer but it goes away after i drive it for a few minutes. any ideas on what it could be?

The icey display is supposed to happen anytime the temp dips below 37. I would just chalk the noise up to your car warming up. There are about 200 moving parts in the front of your car that all go from sitting still in negative temperatures for 15 hours, to suddenly working again. Machines do that. Unless you are having a problem that you feel hinders your saftey, I wouldn't worry about it

Mine does the same thing, I don't think it's a big deal. It didn't affect stopping distance, so I figure it's just the brake pad compound complaining about the temp.

maybe switch out your fluids that handle the cold temps a little better. The stock brake fluid is pretty low grade.

It's normal, wait until it's really cold. Moving and friction type parts don't like the cold. Fluids also need to warm up to perform well.

Yup, cars make weird noises. Unfortunately, some people expect new cars to roll silently, as if propelled by Adam Smiths invisible hand.

But this isn't free market economics. This is internal friggin combustion.

Thousands of contained explosions. Crude, barbaric, and loud. No matter how refined cars become, we are just blowing stuff up inside a metal box.

As someone who drives in temps that often fall to -30 or lower in winter, it sounds like your ABS is kicking in on an icy road. Mine does that too, but once I reach the better maintained roads, ice is not a problem. The ABS is very noisy. It's also a good warning to slow down a little. Warming the car up will not change the ABS behaviour. Perhaps you were just driving on a slippery surface?

I leave in Montreal so I get a lot of cold weather...my problem is that when its in ICY temp (below 0 C) and I'm on the highway, the car shakes (I mean the car itself + the wheel)

also, I've had the car for just over a year (20000km) and I think my gaz mileage has become worst (as I didnt change my driving habits...and I am not usually agresive) I get somehow average of 12-13 liters/100km on an average of 30km/hour

PS: I just brought the car for full service and never missed a schedule maintenance.

Thx

The shaking sounds like ice buildup on the rims, or if you're running winter tires (which you should be because as of today you have to in "la belle province") they could also be out of balance and causing that shake.

Likewise, in the winter your gas mileage will also see a drop... takes more fuel to generate heat as well as takes more energy to get through snow, etc. I'm sitting at about 11L/100 with a heavier foot, especially with my new intake, and an avg speed of about 45km/h.

Its mandatory to have winter tires on?? that is crazy. I live in Alberta and I always drive all season tires.

If your car is building up a lot of ice I would recommend parking your car in underground heated parking for a day(plus you don't have to clean it up ) . That is what I do to get all the chunks off my car.
