Weird Noise

I have a 92 hatch(automatic)...............whenever i am in reverse if i don't step on the brake while backing up, the car makes a metal grinding noise.....but if i step on the brake, there's no sound at all......

Any thoughts

pull the rear tires off and check the brakes/pads

I know what you mean i have the same problem. I don't think its your brakes, its more than likely your rear struts getting worn, espically if you have never changed it before. That was what made my car make that metal grinding noise when i reversed in my 93' hatch ( also automatic ). I'm going to go visit my mechanic and get it fixed sometime next week so hope that solves your problem.
