I was driving the Z today and started to hear a pretty loud whining/screaming noise that seemed to be coming from the engine when I shifted into 3rd, this noise would get louder as my RPM’s went up but would totally stop when I pressed the clutch in so im not sure if it was clutch related. So far this has only happened to the point it did in 3rd and it doesn’t happen all the time, it did happen for a second in 4th but only for a second and then went away by its self. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Thanks for your help.

Hello, Could I get some more specifics such as: Light/med/Hard Accel. Turning/Straight ahead When cold/warmed up. Any drivability issues? Is the noise emmit a vibration even through the shifer? Does it always go away when you push the clutch in? Does the shifter pop out of gear or do you have any issues with shifting in or out of gear? Answer at least these questions and I may be able to come up with a possible diagnosis or resolution for your issue.Thank You, Mike Lucas...P.S. Or you may just be having a belt squeal. If it is coming from the engine. Im unsure at this point.

Hey thanks for the reply, it was under light medium acceleration for the most part, it started out pretty softly but still pretty noticeable, I wasn’t even positive it was my car so I began to accelerate a bit harder and as my RPM’s would climb it would get louder and quicker. All times this noise has occurred I have been going in a straight line no turns at all, and handling and acceleration did not seem to be affected at all. Also all times this has happened the car has been warmed up and I cant remember any odd vibrations through the sifter. So far it seems that it always does go away when the clutch is pushed in but this noise does not happen regularly it almost seems random, I cant figure out any specific pattern. The only other thing I can think of that may be relevant is that I recently had my 30,000 mile service and since then in two or three situations when I have been driving in 4th in the higher RPM range I have shifted to 5th and gassed it and all it would do is rev up as if in neutral even though the shifter still appeared to be in the 5th gear position, each time this has happened I push the clutch back in put it in 4th and then try again and it has always worked the second time so im not sure if there is any relation to the noise. Thanks again for your help I hope this answers everything.

Best case scenario sounds like it could be your pilot/throw out bearing.

Worst case scenario you may need a new transmission.

Wait til it comes back. If you take it in now they will just tell you they can' duplicate the problem.

Problem may never come back...those little gremlins move on to different cars sometimes.

Ya the noise seemed to pretty much come out of nowhere, I didn’t do anything unusual prior to it happening. I hadn’t even ran the car hard for awhile, I generally drive pretty moderately with some instances of pushing the car a bit. The only thing I can think of that was different than usual is I recently had my 30,000 mile check but im not sure what that would contribute to any weird noise. But since I last heard it a little over a week ago I haven’t heard a thing so im hoping John is right and the little gremlins moved on to some other car. But if anyone still has any thoughts on what could have been causing it feel free to still post I still am curious what it was.
