weird noise

I have a 79 Datsun w/ a 2000cc engine w/ 61,000 original miles that has started making a strange noise.  Above the roar of the engine, you can hear a whine that oscillates w/ the rpm of the engine EXCEPT at highway speed.  In that instance it will oscillate down and up but the rpm of the engine remains at a constant.  This truck came w/ factory air and thinking it may be the bearings, I removed the belt but no change.   I am at a loss.  Any ideas?

And... I'm considering replacing the bench seat w/ bucket seats.  Anyone have any advice on what would fit or is this a bonehead move altogether?

It's a Datsun 620.  I finally figured out what the noise was.  It was the fan clutch.  Although it's not as quiet as the original, it's soooo much quieter at highway speeds.  Now if I could just find a 5 speed manual transmission.
