Ok, I have this weird noise, sounds like a bearing or something... RB20DET

Noise occurs when: Car is rolling, with the clutch pushed in... Also when the car is stopped, when it is in neutral and I let go of the clutch...

If the car is not rolling, and I push in the clutch, the noise goes away...

I replaced the throw out bearing, but they ended up giving me the wrong one (a few MM too long) so the noise was still there, and the clutch would slip under heavy throttle... but it worked fine for normal driving on or off of the highway...

So, I look the engine out again, and am gonna have a friend give me his opinion but yeah, I am lost...

I spun the input shaft of the transmission while the car was off and didnt notice any strange noises, also the pilot bushing on the engine where the input shaft from the transmission slides into is not budging... I stuck my finger in to see if it had play but it is in good condition...

Right now, I am thinking it was the long throw out bearing, and the old one going out... maybe the clutch, but does anyone have any other ideas?

any of the gears grinding? might be a busted synchro inside of the transmission. When my 4th gear syncro went. It made a whirring sound from spinning around in the transmission. No bueno!

throwout bearing or input shaft/mainshaft bearing is my guess.

Throwout would make a whirring noise.. I am guessing the pilot bearing, watched some videos of bad pilot bearings and it sounds identical...

Here is my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKBh7y9nmCE - so you can hear it...

So I did a test rolling down the road...

1st gear at 7mph it makes the noise, pull out of gear and push in clutch, noise slowly fades...

try putting back into first going 7mph and the noise gets louder the harder I try (which isnt hard because I am not trying to force it into gear)

Same noise when trying to go into second, and in second... 3, 4 and 5th gears = no noise...

I would like to know the turn out on this , I too have this problem.

But i have a KA trans/RB bell ..on mine it sounds like a scraping noise when in neutral and slowly goes away as i press the clutch .. but continues when in gear .

I have an XTD Stage 3 clutch for the RB20 . and a stock trow bearing . im not exactly sure which on was the one i used i think it was the KA, its the only one that fit.

I went to nissan and their quick diag was throwout.. told them I replaced it 2 times, and they said then the main bearing in the transmission...

So, I am going to take the transmission off the motor again... and hook a power drill up to this sombitch and see if it makes the noise.. if not, ill look at the pilot bearing/bushing and the clutch....

Apparently its the input shaft bearing making the noise.. my dumbass lubed up the pilot bushing to try to get it out so the lube got on the clutch so it makes the clutch slip and grip until it gets going then its fine....

I may just sell it, or now that I have a job, save up and do the bigger turbo, new clutch/pressure plate, lightened flywheel and fix the bearing lol...

I spoke to the transmission guy about that today. I'm taking her in tomorrow, ill keep you guys posted .

Would i need a different shaft bearing since im using the KA gear box? it also has a stage 3 clutch (egay) XTD clutch for the skyline . but i used the KA bearing.

Suggestions ? comments ?

Thanks

Not sure what your issue is but after watching your youtube video I realized that our cars are VERY similar.

Same grey color (best 240 color ever)same engine, rb20detsame exact intercooler set up, xspower?spark plug cover not installed either!

This was when we put the engine in, the car is finished now but look, its your twin! I thought it was pretty cool. Oh, the spark plug cover is on in this picture but it is currently off.

Anyway, this wasnt an attempt to hijack or anything, I would have guessed throwout bearing as well. I can not think of anything else that could even be. Make sure your transmission has the proper amount of fluid in it :p

If you've had to replace it two times ALREADY, chances are its possible again. If something it causing you to keep replacing it check it out.

a bad or bent clutch fork can cause a throwout bearing to go bad pre-maturely.

Could it be from my slave cylinder?

I am using a 240sx DE slave cylinder

AT LOW rpm like 600-800 you can barely hear it... above that it gets louder to about 1500 to 2000 - like really loud...

that is with me not pushing the clutch in..

Mine was-- I have your same mysterious rattle after a rear main seal replacement. The push rod from the slave cylinder is not tight against the shifting fork and they rattle against each other when the clutch pedal is not depressed. I'm bleeding the system tomorrow and hope to snug that piston up against the shifting fork.

your pedal adjustment can cause a premature TOB failure also

why have you replaced it twice already?

Its a bearing in the transmission....

Its not the TOB...

I replaced it 2 times, because the first time it was the wrong one, or something...
