:help

When my engine gets to 3000RPMs, a loud rattling noise is heard from the engine. A couple of my friends have told me that it's the timing chain that needs to be changed. But after reading a couple of pages online, most of the rattling 240sx users get is when the car is first started. I don't want to go through all the work of changing my timing chain and still have that rattling. Can anybody help me out? Thanks! :)

Is it coming from the front of the engine.. near where the timing chain is?

Car: cars what else?

please be more specific with your diagnosis. Does this happen all the time, or when engine is cold only, does that happen when car is in gear, or not, where does the noise sound like its coming from, ect, ect, These types of answers can better help us to help you.

I'm willing to bet it is the catalytic convertor heat shield, as your symptoms are identical to both S13's I've owned. Let me guess: it's a real loud *buzz* or *metal can clank* sound that only happens between 2800 and 3200 RPM's.

The timing chain sound is different...and I have heard that mostly at idle or at low RPMs, not in the range you are describing. Try looking at your heat shield. If it is badly rusted, mangled, or loose, remove it. That will probably get rid of the buzzing. Then, make sure you don't park over piles of dry leaves, gasoline puddles, or nuclear warheads, and you will be just fine and buzz-free.

lol, but what if he lives in a nuclear warhead silo full of gasoline and dry leaves? Where will he park then?

How could I be so negligent? I did not even consider that possibility. Well, if that's the case, he will just have to sell the 240 and buy a Fiero. No chance of that catching on fire!

A loud rattle can be valvetrain noise, timing chain, heat shields, loose pulley, a dozen things. Be more specific. Go look. Listen. The basic things anyone with half a brain would do..........

Hey, thanks for all the help. The rattling does sound between 2800 and 3200 rpms... I'll check out that heat shield as soon as I can. And sorry if my half-a-brain doesn't know WHERE to look or listen, but I'm a computer nerd with not much car knowledge trying to learn. :P

Thanks again! :)

PS: sorry for the multiple posts. :(
