I've got a weird noise coming from an engine bay. Sounds like a bearing or pulley or something of the sort. There was another RB swapped car around here a few months ago, and it sounded the same. This is at idle by the way.

Just wondering if you guys have a similar noise or if I should be worried?

[edit]photobucket screwed with my sound so I had to upload it to myspace. Here is a link.[/edit]

Hope the video works. You can't see much, but you can hear it.

Maybe timing belt tensioner or idler pulley. What I would do first if I were you, is take off the drive belts and see if the noise is still there. Could be your alt. bearings gone bad.

had the alternator rebuilt before the swap.

all pulleys were also lubricated where necessary, and belts are brand new.

Have had motor up and running for maybe 5 days total?

I let it idle for about 15 minutes today (after a few 5-10 min. drives) while it was about ~50 degrees out and didn't hear the noise at all.

i was the one who posted about the same noise a while ago. It only happens with me if my idle is around 750 to 800 or something like that. So i set my PFC to have the idle at 600ish to not here the noise at idle.

it really sounds like its coming from the head, some have said its something with the VCT acting up at low oil pressure, or something with the solenoid that controls it. but yeah Im not really sure why its that.

I replaced the 2 pulleys and have double checked my belt tension. I still have no clue what it could be. Hasnt caused an issue with drivability at all but its something that worries me in the back of my mind.

Cool, I don't have a PFC or a working tach at the moment, but I was told by the guy who swapped my motor in the last one he swapped for a guy, the guy drove it for a year+ with the same noise at idle and when he pulled the motor to change the clutch, he checked everything to make sure it hadn't caused any problems and he said it didn't look like it. Driveability was better because of the clutch but he didn't notice any damage or lackluster performance from the motor.

Why do you say that?

Damn, that was actually one of the parts I was considering replacing (along with the oil pump, I was gonna get both N1) but decided against it because mine looked alright.

So do you think it's a significantly bad noise / potentially damaging?

Or should I overlook it for now since it doesn't seem to be occurring all of the time...?

I know its the water pump because i've done so many RB swaps i cant count it anymore. I've replaced the water pump on my engine as well. The water pumps on the the RB's get trashed from sitting so long and get really nasty. The bearing in them dries up and makes that horrible sound. I've heard about every RB i can think of make the sound except for a very few of them, which still had green coolant in the engine and was fresh ( really rare ).

For the longest time i thought it was the idler pulley or tensioner so i re-tensioned and re-tensioned it.

If you replace the pump is always worth going to an N1 pump instead of the factory one anyhow.

pick up an n1 pump from nismoparts.com, and also if u havent already get the idler and tensioner too from them. cheapest by far that ive found for brand new.
