Lately i started hearing this really low but high pitched whisteling when driving.. its not from the side view mirror and not from the suspension :S.. i parked the car with handbrak on and stepped on the gas pedal and just as the rpm was going down, i can clearly hear the whistle!! when steering also!

anyone else experienced this?

Do you have the CVT? I have a CVT and I've noticed a whine when I slow down to a stop. Almost sounds like a small jet engine winding down.

If it's not the transmission, I'm not sure how much good the rest of us are going to do. You have an HR16DE, here in North America we have only the MR18DE. Different engine designs and displacements.

Knightro - If the car's in park with the brake engaged, this noise should not occur if it's related to the transmission.

My personal vote: Alternator or A/C pulley bearings, or something to do with the ignition or coil packs. It's probably also not a critical failure, if it's even a failure at all and not just a normal noise.

No i dont have the CVT, i did my analysis and deducted that it is from a belt in the motor.. most probably the Power Steering belt!..

ya its not that critical but kindof annoying when cruising around in the late summer nights!

Not to sure about the 1.6, but I was under the assumption that the engine had a Chain, not a belt?

alright i discoverd the source of the sound or at least how to recreate it!..

i just drove around for about 5 miles to locate it and suddenly while in the parking i noticed the sound was coming when i turn the steering wheel all the way to the end.. its like a sound of a chain or a belt.. the weird this is that the sound stays if i hold the steering wheel when turned all the way to the end (just before hitting the limit!)

Ever Victorious can u plz give me ur opinion about this!

It's normal for the power steering pump on ANY car to complain a bit when you're at the extreme ends of your steering range.

ya i agree, but the thing is that the sound comes out even when steering normally and/or driving in a straight line!

If you have a 2008, why don't you just go to the dealer and ask them to look into the issue?

Service is part of the price you paid when you bought your car...

Squeeks from the engine bay can sometimes be caused by belts or even bad bearings on alternator pullys and such. Just a suggestion to be considered.
