weird light behavior

I have a 93 hatch, and I thought one of the bulbs in my A/C head unit was burned out cause some of the backlighting wasn't coming on. So I took the unit out and took out the white bulb (the one closest to the car's front) from under the flap. I put the unit back in and was planning to replace it when I got the new bulb. But I just noticed tonight that now everything lights up fine. Am I missing something? There is only one bulb in the unit and all of the lights work. If anyone can help me out on this please let me know. Thanks.
