weird idle

hello,

my stock '89 240 seems to idle strangely and it sounds like a problem. Its idle can range anywhere from 1800rpm to about 600rpm ready to stall out. this happens both when the engine is cold or warm. the changes in rpm are not sharp. theyre pretty smooth. i could sit there for 3-5 minutes and see it climb from 900rpm to 1800 and to 600 a couple of times. someone told me it could be a vaccum leak. there are no clicking noises or any observable abnormalities comming from the enigne. how could i detect what this is and go about fixing it? any ideas would help greatly. thanks!
