Weird humming noise coming from rear. Help!!

I have a 98 I30. I sometimes get a weird humming noise coming from my drivers side rear panel. The sound seems to come from underneath the car. I was thinking it might be the muffler, but the muffler is on the other side of the car. I notice the noise when I turn off the car. The noise has changed to a pulsating hum instead of a constant hum. It lasts for a few minutes. I was wondering if this humming noise is normal or not.

It is most likely your fuel pump.Sometimes the humming can indicate an impending fuel pump failure. Other times they just make noise.
