weird engine noise

ok i just bought a 92 240sx yesterday there is a weird noise comming from the engine sounds like clanking it gets louder when the rpm is at 700 i dont know how else to describe it. would anyone have an idea what could be causing the noise? thanks

ok i figured it out the chain is hitting on the plate over it. is it ok to take that plate off? thanks

That's the timing chain guide. Yes, take it off. There's also another chain guide off to the side, you have to pull the upper timing cover off to get to it.

now that all depends on if its the DOHC or the SOHC , if yu have the DOHC then go ahead and pull em off..if yu have the SOHC then id suggest replacing all parts and it will stop , but yu cannot remvoe the guides from the SOHC

whatz the proper way to fix that?? replace a new guide?

DOHC's have two chains. There is are upper and lower chain guides on the DOHC, only a set of lower chain guides on the SOHC. The upper chain guides can be removed, the lower chain guides need to be replaced.
