I've heard this particular sound about 1 to 1.5 years ago. It comes and goes. I used to think it was the tension rod bushings, but no longer think it's that....because i just replaced them. I usually can reproduce it when backing up, either going down my driveway or while parking into a parallel spot. Seems more prevalent while I'm turning and backing up, which is why I mostly hear it while parking into parallel spaces. It sounds hollowy....i guess cause when I hear it it's just echoing through my chasis. Ah well....it's a old car...I guess i'll have to live with it. could it be worn out bushings on the subframe? I have a '93.

do you have a clutchpack lsd? if so thats prob whats causing it. if not your subframe bushings are probably worn out.

Same thing was happening here. Turned out to be my top bearing mounts. My car would clunk when backing up and make a grinding sound when I turned the wheels. I replaced my top bearing mounts with pillowball mounts and the problem was fixed. Look for the S13 top bearing mount write-up in the middle of the page here...http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/suspension.html
