it's probably a kickdown switch.

automatic BMWs have them. it tell the ECU to downshift the transmission and then shift at the highest possible points in all gears.

like a button that puts the car into "sport mode" while flooring it.

he is right, its so your old auto transmission would know when you were at WOT and downshift to give you more power.I dont think it holds you in gear to the possible rpm, thats the throttle valves job, but i could be wrong...

I removed mine, connected a jumper wire between the contacts, wrapped it in electrical tape, and zip-tied it up and out of the way. Makes the shift schedule much more aggressive. A lot of cars come with this switch, as well as a "power" switch on the dash (lots of Toyotas have this), which basically does on command what I hardwired mine to do. The power switch just runs parallel to this switch and completes the circuit instead of the pedal switch.

So is this button in all, most, or just a few Auto 89 FBs? Also, does it have to be pressed on in order for the trans to downshift and what not?

No, it's just an indicator to the computer that you're are(or trying) to be more agressive on the accellerator. As the others said in a nutshell, it alters the shift points to keep the engine closer to the peak hp/torque ouput rpm. My '90 Accord had this, except it was a switch on the Auto shifter, labeled 'Sport Shift' mode. I never turned it off, the thing was pretty sluggish without it.

It is basicly like a highway or passing switch. When you hammer on the throttle it shifts down so you can speed up faster.

work out some angst and aggression on it with a mallet, then when panting and sweating from beating it senseless, remove it and chuck it.

It will not be needed if you are converting from auto to manual.

on an automatic, its the WOT switch... it tells the computer that you are Requesting to downshift and go faster, then the ECU checks the cars parameters and if it decides to let you... you downshift.

on a manual you have a neutral safety swtich... meaning you can't start the car until the switch is depressed.

man of few words.

You all been talking a lot, but this man said it.

He is right. When you floor it, it downshifts, so more torque to tires and that means sideways.

I take it Dan's right, my car won't start till the switch is depressed.
