I have a 2004 M45. Every morning if its below 40 degrees, my smart key will not activate the doors or trunk release. I come out at noon its 50 degrees and it works. Once I open with the key manually all electrical issues are normal with no cold starting issue. The car has the factory battery. I planned to replace it in Aug 08 6 months before the expected life expires. Could this still be a weak battery. Same results both smart keys.Above 50 degrees everything normal.

Sounds like a weak car battery.

Also ... have you replaced the smart key fob battery yet? Is the key itself warm (car cold) when you try the open in the sub-40 weather?

Just remember to be careful when replacing the remote batteries. From what I have been told the security chip in those keys are known to fall out rendering your key useless. I would replace the battery in one, check to make sure all is well, then replace the battery in the other one. Just make sure to keep an eye out for anything falling out of the fob.

And like szho said, I would look at changing the car battery as that is what I believe it is also.

smart key warm. Car outside. I plan to replace car and fob batteries. whats unusual is after I open with the metal key electric locks work fine and brisk cold starts. I guess there must be some kind of amplification of the amps when the ignition is acutated but resting cold amps is insufficient to actuate the remote.
